QHow do I burn agarwood?
Agarwood releases its fragrance when it is warmed. Place a mica plate on an electric incense burner or over charcoal, set a small piece of agarwood on top and warm it gently. The fragrance spreads with very little smoke. Lighting the wood directly produces more smoke than scent, so a low temperature works best.
For incense sticks, light the tip, put out the flame and stand the stick in a holder.
QCan agarwood chips or slices be brewed as tea?
Yes. Agarwood chips and slices can be steeped as tea. Put a few small pieces in hot water and let them steep. The same pieces can be steeped again several times. Adjust the amount and steeping time to your taste.
QHow do I care for an agarwood bracelet or pendant?
Keep it away from prolonged contact with water, sweat, perfume and cosmetics. After wearing, wipe it lightly with a dry cloth. With frequent handling, the surface develops a natural sheen.
QHow should I store agarwood?
Keep it in a cool place away from direct sunlight and moisture. An airtight container or zip bag keeps the fragrance from fading and prevents other odors from settling into the wood.
Agarwood does not spoil easily, even over long periods. The Ten Virtues of Incense also say that it "does not decay even when kept for a long time" (久藏不朽).
QHow should I store agarwood oil?
Close the cap tightly and keep the bottle in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children.
QHow can I tell if agarwood is genuine?
First, check the scientific name of the agarwood tree, the country of origin and the source of the raw material. A craft item with an unusually strong scent at room temperature may have been treated with artificial fragrance. We explain the details in How to Choose Agarwood.
QIs agarwood that floats in water fake?
No. Whether agarwood sinks depends on its resin content. Wild agarwood with a very high resin content sinks, but most cultivated agarwood floats. Floating agarwood, known as hwangsukhyang (黃熟香), is genuine agarwood. Grades & Names
